About Shiva Temple Deepam :

welcome to our mission to light our temples with oil lamps. Lighting traditional oil lamps with a cotton wick in a brass or a silver or an earthen lamp has been part our religious tradition since time immemorial. Lord Siva has also been worshipped in the form of Agni at Thiruvannamalai shrine and its association with Karthigai deepam festival is well known.

We intend to provide temples with oil tins of Gingelly oil – Nallennai or of mahua oil – Illupennai. Illuppai or Mahua as it is known in North India (botanical name: Bassia longifolia) is a suitable choice for oil in temple.

Lighting temples with vilakku (lamp) is an adorable need extolled by saints in our dharma – more so the Nayanmars. Please do your bid to fill in the oil to light a lamp at your nearby temple or join us to light the temples where immediate attention is needed.

We are involved in renovation of a few temples in Tamilnadu and have completed a few in the recent past. You can find the details in the sidebar.

Illupai can also be planted wherever possible and that will serve as a source of oil and also be of ecological & aesthetic value and help combat global warming. We can also assist you in raising these plantations.

Shiva Manas Puja, written by Adi guru Shankaracharya is a very special hymn, which not only praises Shiva, but also depicts the true flavour of Shiva worship. Shiva needs devotion and not demonstration. In this stottram we offer to the great Lord various offering not in physical form but in mental form. We Start by offering bath, cloths, foods, devotion and finally offer ourselves to the Lord. The beauty lies in the fact that everything we offer, we offer in the portal of our mind and not physical. The compassionate Mahadev accepts all our offering and frees us from the consequences of our wrong doings, done knowingly or unknowingly.

1. O Lord, O abode of compassion, O Pasupati, deign to acceptmy mental offerings of a gem-studded seat, a bath with coolwater, divine garments inlaid with precious stones, sandalpaste scented with musk, a garland made of jasmine,champaka flowers and bilva leaves, incense, and the waving of lights.

2. O Lord, be gracious enough to accept rice cooked in milkwith ghee and sweetened, placed in a golden vessel set withgems, five varieties of eatables with milk and curd, ripeplantains, juices, many varieties of cooked leafy vegetables,sweet water flavoured with edible camphor, and betel leavesand nuts, all of which I offer mentally to You.

3. O Lord, be so kind as to accept my worship offered mentally with an umbrella, two chaamaras, a fan, a clean mirror,playing of musical instruments such as veena, beating of various kinds of drums, songs and dance, prostration with theeight limbs, and various hymns of praise.Note. The eight limbs of prostration (sashtanga namaskara)are the hands, legs, knees, chest, head, eyes, mind andspeech.

4. O Sambhu, You are my Self, my intellect is Goddess Parvati, your attendants are my vital airs, my body is Your temple, allenjoyments of sense-objects are Your worship, my sleep issamadhi, all my movements on my feet are circumambulationsof You, whatever I speak is praise of You, and thus whateveraction I perform is Your worship.Note. When a devotee totally surrenders himself to God, thenwhatever he does is according to God’s will. He gives up allsense of being a doer and an enjoyer.

5. Whatever wrongs I may have committed with my hands,feet, speech, body, ears, eyes, or mind, in any action whetherprescribed (by the scriptures) or not, deign to forgive all of them. O Ocean of compassion, O Mahadeva, O Sambhu. Hailunto you.

1.Study the Vedas daily.Perform diligently the duties (karmas) ordained by them.Dedicate all those actions (karmas) as worship unto the Lord.Renounce all desires in the mind.Wash away the hoards of sins in the bosom.Recognise that the pleasures of sense-objects (samsar) are riddled with pain.Seek the Self with consistent endeavour.Escape from the bondage of ‘home’.

2.Seek companionship with Men of Wisdom.Be established in firm devotion to the Lord.Cultivate the virtues such as Shanti etc.,Eschew all desire-ridden actions.Take shelter at a Perfect Master (Sat-Guru).Everyday serve His Lotus feet.Worship “Om” the Immutable.Listen in depth, the Upanishadic declarations.

3.Reflect ever upon the meaning of the Upanishadic commandments, and takerefuge in the Truth of Brahman.Avoid perverse arguments but follow the discriminative rationale of the Sruti(Upanishads).Always be absorbed in the attitude (bhav) – “I am Brahman”.Renounce pride.Give up the delusory misconception – “I am the body”.Give up totally the tendency to argue with wise men.

4.In hunger diseases get treated.Daily take the medicine of Bhiksha-food.Beg no delicious food.Live contentedly upon whatever comes to your lot as ordained by Him.Endure all the pairs of opposites: heat and cold, and the like.Avoid wasteful talks.Be indifferent.Save yourself from the meshes of other peoples’ kindness.

5.In solitude live joyously.Quieten your mind in the Supreme Lord.Realise and see the All-pervading Self every where.Recognise that the finite Universe is a projection of the Self.Conquer the effects of the deeds done in earlier lives by the present right action.Through wisdom become detached from future actions (Agami).Experience and exhaust “Prarabdha” the fruits of past actions.Thereafter, live absorbed in the bhav - “I am Brahman”

Swami Biography in Brief

Swami Sadhananda lived in this village Alapakkam (1909-1922), his last phase of life spent here serving the mankind and teaching spiritual exercises, and still living here with spiritual body and blessing the devotees. This place Alapakkam is located near Perungalathur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.

Swami Sadhananda was brought here by Sri Narayanasamy - his first and most disciple. The Guruji attained Jeeva Samathi in 1922. During his sadhu lifespan he did several miracles to save peoples and the village, besides guiding his students to be blessed with high levels in sprituality.

சுவாமி சதானந்தா தன் வாழ்கையின் கடைசி காலத்தை ஆலப்பாக்கம் கிராமத்தில் (1909-1922) வாழ்ந்து ஜீவ சமாதி நிலையை அடைந்து பக்தர்களுக்கு அருள் பாலிக்கிறார். இந்த ஆலப்பாக்கம் எனும் கிராமம் சென்னையை அடுத்த பெருங்களத்தூரில் அமைந்துள்ளது.

சுவாமி சதானந்தசதானந்தா சுவாமிகள் தன் முதல் நிலை சீடர் ஸ்ரீ நாராயணசாமி ஐயா மூலமாக இங்கு அழைத்துவரப்பட்டார். சுவாமி சதானந்தா இங்கு வாழ்ந்த நாட்களில் கிராம மக்களுக்காகவும் தன் பக்தர்களுக்காகவும் நிறைய சித்துகளை நிகழ்தினார்.

சுவாமி சதானந்தா தன்னுடைய ஜீவசமாதியை 1922 இல் ஏற்பாடுசெய்து கொண்டார். இங்கு அவர் தனது சூட்சும தேகத்தோடு பக்தர்களுக்கு அருள் பாலிக்கிறார்.
